Week One
Discussed the meaning of "literature". Studied Anglo-Saxon history (briefly) along with some of the characteristics of Anglo-Saxon poetry. We learned how to take notes on the introductory materials and on the reading of the poem.
Read Beowul (excerpts). Discussed the nature of heroism in the poem. Discussed social codes (loyalty, obedience, heroism etc).
Week Two
Discussed the nature of modern heroism. Wrote paper on the topic "Compare and contrast the Anglo-Saxon heroic ideal with our modern perception of heroism." Due Wednesday.
Began reading "Canterbury Tales". Notes on introductory materials... Prologue (notes on each pilgrim). Pardoners Tale (discussed irony, satire, framed narrative, simile, etc). Assignment: construct your own "Canterbury Tales" prologue with a six line intro, and six lines for three pilgrims. Choose your own pilgrimage and characters. The poem should be written in heroic couplets. Due next Wednesday.
